Château Lezongars

Located in the Côtes de Bordeaux appellation to the southeast of Bordeaux, Château Lezongars has over 200 years of history and 28 hectares of vineyards. Since the early 19th century, the estate has been closely intertwined with Bordeaux’s story, carrying a legacy of family tales and memorable chapters.

Maritime Trade and the Legacy of a Wine Estate

The history of Château Lezongars can be traced back to the late 18th century and is closely linked to the Ladurantie family, a renowned Bordeaux maritime dynasty. At the time, Pierre Ladurantie—known as a “king of ships”—was active in shipping as well as the Bordeaux wine trade. Through marriage with the Lezongars family, he received these vineyards as part of his wife’s dowry. To honor his mother’s family and the emotional bond to this land, later generations named the estate “Lezongars.” The name has since become a symbol of the château’s heritage and continuity, reflecting deep respect for tradition and establishing the estate as a cornerstone of the family’s legacy.

Maritime Trade and the Legacy of a Wine Estate

In the early 19th century, Château Lezongars welcomed a distinguished new owner: Louis Napoléon Lannes, Duke of Montebello. He was the son of Marshal Jean Lannes—one of Napoleon I’s closest and most trusted aides—whose name is engraved on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, a lasting emblem of imperial glory. As the heir to this military legacy, Louis Napoléon Lannes devoted great energy to restoring the estate, giving new life to its architecture and landscape. More than an agricultural holding, it became a symbol of family prestige. He also recruited Pierre Cazo, a highly regarded winemaker in Bordeaux at the time, to modernize production and significantly elevate quality. Although the estate changed hands again not long after, his reforms laid a solid foundation for the château’s development—marking a key transition from aristocratic property to a professionally run wine estate.

From Aristocratic Estate to Modern Winery

After several changes of ownership, Château Lezongars gradually evolved from an aristocratic estate into a respected winery focused on fine wine production. In 1998, British couple Philip and Sarah Iles acquired the château and carried out major renovations and investments—upgrading the cellar, replanting vineyards, and improving drainage systems. These efforts significantly strengthened both vineyard management and winemaking precision. Today, Château Lezongars is internationally recognized for its classic style and consistent quality. The 2001 vintage of L’Enclos de Château Lezongars was even selected for the authoritative guide 1001 Wines You Must Try Before You Die (edited by Neil Beckett), highlighting its outstanding performance in quality and character.

From Aristocratic Estate to Modern Winery

In 2011, Château Lezongars entered a new chapter by joining Dashang Group. This acquisition created fresh momentum, enabling the estate to expand its global presence while staying true to traditional winemaking. From 2014 onwards, the château introduced Sauvignon Blanc and Malbec, progressively renewed selected vineyard parcels, invested in modern cultivation equipment, and rebuilt its winemaking facilities. Today, Château Lezongars stands both as a guardian of Bordeaux tradition and as a witness to cultural exchange—continuing to attract wine lovers worldwide through its rich history and outstanding quality.

The estate lies on the hillside belt along the Garonne River. Sloping terrain ensures natural drainage and greater sun exposure, helping grapes ripen evenly and deliver fresh, layered fruit expression.
