The history of Château Lagorce dates back to the Gallo-Roman period. The estate is set within an ancient church, and to this day, the church windows from that era can still be seen. Located in the southeast of Bordeaux, the château spans 35 hectares of vineyards, ideally positioned between the Garonne and Dordogne rivers—an exceptional setting that provides optimal conditions for vine growth. Passed down through generations of the Mazeau family, the estate has been shaped by four generations of winemakers, carrying forward a long-standing tradition of craftsmanship.

The modern growth of Château Lagorce is inseparable from the outstanding contribution of the Benjamin Mazeau family. Their winemaking history can be traced back to the 15th century, and today, members of the family operate different estates around Targon. In 1928, Benjamin’s parents purchased Château Dudigerack in the town of Targon. Benjamin’s father, René Mazeau—also a physics and chemical engineering specialist—made pioneering advances in viticulture and land management: nurturing stronger vines, building high-performing drainage systems, and preserving natural vegetation between rows. These forward-thinking practices laid a solid foundation for the vineyard. He also played a key role in developing winemaking methods. René Mazeau pioneered macération à chaud (hot maceration), which involves heating the grape must during the first maceration. This innovation significantly enhanced the quality of Château Lagorce wines and helped the estate gain strong recognition in the market.
